VISWALK application examples (AVI videos)
The following examples show different applications of VISWALK. All videos have been generated by means of the built-in keyframe editor. Video playback requires either the Xvid (www.xvid.org) or x264/h264 codec (see FAQ #91 for more information).
Terminal Simulation & Escalators
Simulation of a concourse for public transport connections inside an airport. Escalators can be adjusted to local environment in various ways: besides the dimensions of stairs and balustrades also the percentage and speed distribution of pedestrians walking can be defined for example.

Pedestrian Simulation - Counterflows
The new add-on allows pedestrians to move freely in two dimensions. They thus follow the Social Force Model of Prof. Helbing from the ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich). This makes it possible for example, to simulate the opposing flow situation, as lanes are created dynamically and can be destroyed again.

Different queuing behavior
In VISWALK it is also possible to include areas modeling different forms of waiting behavior as part of pedestrian movement. This example shows two different forms of waiting during an exhibition: there are visitors who wait in line in the entrance hall, and visitors who stop in front of the exhibits and watch them for a while.

More than pure pedestrian analysis: VISWALK + VISSIM
Interaction between pedestrians and vehicles
The integration of VISWALK in VISSIM is the only microscopic traffic simulation which allows interactive consideration of vehicles and pedestrians on the level of single increments.

Different walking behavior and interaction at traffic signal systems (e.g. pedestrians who ignore red lights)
Any number of pedestrian categories with different types of walking and waiting behavior can be modeled in combination of VISWALK with VISSIM. This example presents a pedestrian crossing with pedestrian-actuated traffic lights, distinguishing three types of pedestrian behavior patterns: pedestrians who wait for the green light, pedestrians who do not press the traffic light button and ignore the red light, and those who press the button and cross the road despite the WAIT sign. The pedestrians are displayed in different colors to better distinguish their different behavior patterns.

- Inappropriate behavior in traffic
Modeling inappropriate behavior in traffic
The realistic simulation of pedestrian behavior also makes it possible to model inappropriate behavior in traffic. This example shows how a group of pedestrians can force vehicles to slow down or stop.
